Wo-hoo! You've nailed down your blog niche and topic, you've got your first posts written and your blog has a shiny new theme and is beau-ti-ful. You are ready to launch your brand new blog! Or, wait, are you really ready? Have you posted your blog's Privacy Policy and Term & Conditions yet?

Why Your Blog Needs a Privacy Policy and Terms & Conditions

I get it. You're excited to launch your shiny new blog onto the internet. You should be excited. It's an amazing accomplishment to get a new blog put together and ready to go. But hold up a second before you launch.

Even though the internet turned 30 years old in 2019, it's still a lot like a wild frontier. Governments are still trying to grapple with how to regulate the internet and how to create legislation to deal with all it involves.

Some of the most recent and powerful laws regulating the internet pertain to privacy. If you haven't heard of GDPR or other country specific laws like the German Federal Data Protection Act, this is a topic you will want to bring yourself up to speed on ASAP. One of my favorite sources is this podcast from Heart, Soul & Hustle. Lawyer Gina Shingle Jaffe talks about what bloggers need to make their site comply with privacy laws like GDPR.

The US FTC also requires any page that uses cookies to post a Privacy Policy.

It's important to note that penalties (monetary and more) for violation of these laws can apply to you even if you don't live in the European Union.

Many advertisers also require you to prominently post your Privacy Policy on your blog. We post ours via a link in our footer.

The bottom line is that every blog should have a Privacy Policy that complies with privacy laws. It's also a good idea to post your site's Terms & Conditions.

What is a Blog Privacy Policy?

The purpose of a Privacy Policy is to create transparency between you, as a site owner, and your visitors and readers.

When you visit a website, you leave behind bits of information which may include your name, email, IP address and more. The purpose of a blog Privacy Policy is to disclose what information the website collects, what it does with this information, who else has access to this information, how this information is protected and how long it is kept.

What are Terms & Conditions?

A website's Terms & Conditions are another important legal page every website should have. While this page isn't required by law, it's not something you should skip to save time.

Your Terms & Conditions pages sets out the rules for use of your website. This page can limit your liability should a customer take you to court. It can also protect your rights to the content contained in your website.

If you ever facing a legal battle, a court will look at your website terms to determine the contractual terms between you and the customer. When creating this page, you'll want to take approach it with the goal of having it hold up in court.

How to Create a Privacy Policy for Your Blog (and Terms & Conditions)

One option is to contract with an attorney to draft a custom Privacy Policy and Terms & conditions for your blog. Of course, this option could get quite pricey.

Another option is to use an online service. My favorite online service for generating a free, tailored Privacy Policy and Terms & Conditions for your blog is PrivacyPolicies.com. Use their free generators to create your blog policies and get compliant today. They even have a free Cookie Consent Banner Popup generator you can use as well.

In addition to their free services, PrivacyPolicies.com offers policy optimizations services to include clauses for analytics tools (like Google Analytics), ads, payment processors, remarketing and GDPR. For a lot less than you would pay a lawyer, you can get a customized and it's a one-time fee, no recurring subscriptions.

Time to Get Legal and Create Your Blog Privacy Policy and Terms & Conditions

Right now, before you launch your new blog or even if your blog is already launched, protect yourself by getting legal and creating your blog Privacy Policy and Terms & Conditions using free tools like PrivacyPolicies.com. You'll be glad you did.

Once your policies are created, stick links to those puppies in a prominent place like a footer menu, sidebar menu or under your top menu links in a sub-menu under your About page.

And don't forget to educate yourself more about the legalities of running a blog. It may not be the most exciting blogging topic but it might be the most important.
